The Trebišnjica river flows through the heart of the city. The city’s old town quarter dates to the 18th-century Ottoman period, and includes the Arslanagić Bridge. The city lies in the Trebišnjica river valley, at the foot of Leotar, in southeastern Herzegovina, some 30 km (19 mi) by road from Dubrovnik, Croatia, on the Adriatic coast. There are several mills along the river, as well as several bridges, including three in the city of Trebinje itself, as well as a historic Ottoman Arslanagic bridge nearby. The river is heavily exploited for hydro-electric energy. After it passes through the Popovo Polje area southwest of the city, the river – which always floods in the winter – naturally runs underground to the Adriatic, near Dubrovnik. Ravno is a town and seat of its municipality in southern Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is located in the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina entity. Ravno was a separate county until 1963, when it became a part of the Trebinje municipality. In 1994, the border changed and Ravno became a municipality again. This time however, part of the frontier lands of Trebinje municipality were added as part of Ravno. When Ravno inherited part of the former Trebinje municipality it had an area of 447 km2 (173 sq mi). Ravno was first attacked in early October 1991 by JNA forces, which levelled the village on the way to attack Dubrovnik in the Croatian War of Independence. Ravno again suffered heavy damage during the War in Bosnia and Herzegovina, when the majority of villages were destroyed. The area around Ravno was used as a corridor from where Dubrovnik county in Croatia was continuously attacked. Cave Vjetrenica Vjetrenica is located in Popovo Polje, meaning priest’s field, where polje stands for karstic plain), which is itself located in a southernmost regions of Bosnia and Herzegovina, West Herzegovina, near the Adriatic coast. Its entrance is near the village of Zavala, in west – south-western corner of polje. When the Čapljina-Stolac road was built during the Austro-Hungarian period, it ran through the necropolis, leaving 11 tombstones to the north and all the rest to the south of the road. The visionaries often refer to the apparition as the “Gospa” which is Croatian for “Lady”. On June 24, 1981, young Mirjana Dragicevic and Ivanka Ivanković reported seeing an apparition of the Virgin Mary in a village in what is now Bosnia and Herzegovina. The following day another vision was reported, this time also by four other young people:, Marija Pavlović Jakov Colo, Vicka Ivanković, and Ivan Dragicevic. The children claim that they saw an apparition on the hill Crnica (on the place called Podbrdo); the alleged apparition was a white form with a child in her arms. Surprised and scared, they did not approach. The next day at the same time four of the youths returned, and were later joined by the other two. For several years the six visionaries reported seeing daily apparitions from the Virgin Mary and Medjugorje became crowded with pilgrims. It has been reported that Our Lady of Medjugorje has been appearing daily to three of these visionaries ever since, some say that they have stopped having daily apparitions.
